For Art's Sake

A New & Recycled Boutique

Is this the end or the beginning?  It depends on how you look at it.

As many locals are now aware, as of last Saturday, the brick and mortar store of “For Arts’ Sake!” on Ocean Avenue is now permanently closed. We’ve had a good run of nearly two years. Along the way we have met some wonderful artists, craftsman, lifetime friends, new and old visitors to the area, community and school leaders and the wonderful friendly faces of local customers who visited week after week.

There have been a series of events that have transpired over the past six months that have brought me to this decision.  We downsized at the end of last year hoping that would better help us meet expenses.   It took 6 weeks to get the word out again that we were still here (confusion with the empty store/marquee next door) and then the next 6 weeks following were very promising between Spring Break, The Farmers Market, Easter, family vacations etc. I was optimistic.

Then came April 1st. No more tourists, family vacations etc…Many locals remained  annoyed by the way they were treated with the parking situation, towing etc. at the Farmers Market. I was told personally by many people that they would never shop in our plaza again.  While I understand the position of some of the store owners in not having sufficient parking for their regular customers, I was ever hopeful that a compromise could be reached to the satisfaction of both parties.  For me, the Farmers Market was a boost to my business,  causing those drivers normally zipping by A1A to finally stop and check out the plaza.  Unfortunately , since the 1st of April, there have been numerous days that we have had 5 or less customers in the store all day.  The Farmers Market is also slower, but at least there isn’t the overhead.  I will continue working local Farmers Markets, maintain my booth at Wildwood Antique Mall (1240 Sarno Road, Melbourne) as well as explore other endevours .

It has been a pleasure to give back, even in a small way to the Melbourne Beach Community that I have grown to love as well as contributing to Brevard County local schools art, theater and music programs. It has been wonderful to work with you all.  I  wish that the situation could be different, however I’m at peace with all of it and truly looking forward to what is next.  Continuing to keep the store open through the already slow summer months has proved to be futile.

If i may, on a personal note, I wanted to share that  the hardest part of this whole transition will be in not seeing my right-hand gal, Shayla on a weekly basis.  She has been there from the beginning when we were overwhelmed with where to put everything and the task of making it all look like an inviting store that we’d like to shop in. I had placed an ad for part-time help on CraigsList and Shayla was the second person to call.  After I talked to her, I took the ad down. Turned out she never did work part-time. She proved to be invaluable.  I learned just as much from her as she ever did from me. She is wise and talented well-beyond her years and has a bright future ahead.
Through Shayla, I met her mom Nova and dad Darrell who are both equally skilled and talented and have helped me with everything from carpentry to lighting to painting over these many months.
Last summer Tori walked in looking for part-time work and has filled in over weekends etc.  She is a delight to be around and fit right in.  Thank you SO MUCH each and everyone of you!  It wouldn’t have been near as much fun without you being there.
All of these memories remind me that this whole experience was soooo worth it!  No regrets, just a whole lot of good experiences and friendships that will last a lifetime. So for me, this isn’t the end, just a new start, the beginning of what’s next.  For me, there always has to be a “what’s next” and I am grateful for my health and all the opportunities that have led to now.
OK I think that about covers it.  Thank you to our loyal customers, new friends and supporters of the arts.  If you enjoy small, unique neighborhood stores, please shop local whenever possible. Also I believe that art, music and theater are key to a student’s development, confidence and self-esteem and that the earlier and more often these programs are available the better. Please support your local schools, from grade school on up to keep these programs ongoing for many years to come.
And that’s my last word…thanks for reading and for your support of me, the girls and the store.  I’ll be seeing you around town.  Enjoy the summer.

An Interview About “For Arts’ Sake!” A New and Recycled Boutique

Pamela J. Wilson is the owner of “For Arts’ Sake!” A New and Recycled Boutique which began in August 2011 as “Melbourne Beach Thrift Store & Boutique LLC”.  The store supports local artists of all ages as well as the Melbourne Beach Community.  In addition, a portion of the sales proceeds each month support local schools’ art and theatre programs which are in danger of being limited or eliminated altogether from Brevard County school curriculum.

The following interview further explains the concept and history of the store:

 Q.  What brought you to the area?

A.   I’ve lived in Sarasota for 31 years so I’m technically a true Florida girl.  My late father lived on the east coast in nearby Grant/Valkaria area for 30 years.  When he became ill, I spent much more time in Brevard County and discovered the picturesque beaches, abundant parks and respect for historic buildings.  I was attracted specifically to Melbourne Beach because of the small-town appeal.

Q. Why open a store?

 A.  Having a store is something I’ve always wanted to do.  I’ve been an avid Thrift and Resale shopper for many years. I actually like to work, be around people and give back to the community I live in. When I made the big change and moved to the area two years ago I thought about what type of “job” I would be happy doing the rest of my life;  “For Arts’ Sake!” was just a natural.

QWhat do you sell at your store?

 A.  Local artists and craftsmen’s’ work of course (like jewelry, photography, knitting, paintings, candles, gift items and more), along with clothing for men, women and children, accessories, home décor, furniture, and many unique one of a kind items.  Our tag line is “A New and Recycled Boutique”  which explains the mix of repurposed and brand new items available in the store.

Q.  What is your favorite thing about the store?

A.  When I was little and company would come over to my house, whether they were young or old, relatives or not, I’d start dragging my favorite things from my room like “show and tell.”  All these years later I feel the same way when customers come in; it is my chance to show them what’s new and some of the special handcrafted items. I love it when customers are as excited about the art, jewelry, décor, gifts and clothing as I am.

Q: Why support local schools’ art and theater programs?

A.  I wanted to give back to the community in some way.  Art, music and theatre always seem to be to be the first thing to go when schools’ budgets are cut and I want to contribute, even in a small way to keeping those programs going.

Q.  Are you personally an artist?

A.  LOL.  I can’t even draw a decent stick figure, but as far back as I can remember I’ve always had a love and appreciation of art, music and the performing arts.  I’ve spent a lot of time in art museums, love all kinds of music and enjoy local theatre.  I was encouraged by a grade school Art teacher for my watercolor abstracts and basically every project that I created whether you could tell what it was or not.  (At least it was colorful!)  I played the flute in the school band (only because my parents wouldn’t allow me to play the drums!) and acted in school plays and community theatre.  I’m grateful that my creativity was constantly reinforced.   I believe children form opinions of who they are at an early age and it is difficult to change their view of themselves, especially if it is negative, as they grow older. I believe art, music and theatre in schools go a long way in developing self-esteem in our young people, which is why I’m so passionate about giving to these programs.

Q.  How does a local artist or craftsmen go about consigning at your store?

 A.  Just give us a call and we’ll talk about your craft, what your price point is for the items you want to sell and whether or not your items would make a good addition to our local mix.  We don’t duplicate what another artist is already doing and we look at the amount of space the work would occupy.  At that point, if it seems a good fit for both of us, we would set up and appointment and have you bring in 4-8 pieces depending on the size.  We have a 60/40 consignment agreement with 60% going to the artists.  After 60 days, we will re-evaluate what items are the most popular and either replenish or make changes.

 Q.  What are your hours and how can we find out more about your store?

 A.  We are open 6 days a week, Monday-Saturday from 10am – 5:30pm. You can be our” friend” on Facebook, ; Tweet us on Twitter,;  read our Blog on WordPress,,  email us at or call us at #321.507.3670.  Or just stop in and say “Hello!” We will be glad to show you our latest treasures.

Cha Cha Cha Changes….

We are still here!! Just moved right next door.

We are still here!! Just moved right next door.

If  you have been driving on Ocean Ave in the past month, you may have noticed a change to our store and the “For Rent” sign in the window next door.  We’ve heard the relief from customers when they discovered we were “still here” and excitement over the new look and feel of the store.  Melbourne Beach Thrift Store and Boutique which began in August 2011 became “For Arts’ Sake!”  A New and Recycled Boutique in January 2013.

Gone are the Thrift Store type items like CD’s, books, housewares, typical yard sale  items and misc. knick-knacks. Remaining are new and gently used clothing for men, women and children, gifts, accessories, furniture and home decor.  Above all, we are still focused on showcasing local artists’ work such as handcrafted jewelry of all kinds , note-cards, photography, knitted scarves, hats and bags, gift items, handcrafted flutes, pottery, handcrafted woodwork and home decor, string art, paintings, re-purposed furniture and much more.  We are always looking to consign new artists and craftsman who would benefit from our store to showcase their work.  Upon approval. we offer a 60/40 consignment agreement (60% to the artists).

Our new name, “For Arts’ Sake” more specifically defines our mission and purpose.  We continue to support Brevard County Public Schools K-12 Art and Theater Programs with a portion of our monthly proceeds as well as continuing to support local artists of all ages!

So, next time you are in the area, stop by and check-out the new space and boutique-like atmosphere.  Our prices will still save you money over traditional retail.  Be sure and check out our FaceBook page for our “Riddle of the Week.”  Answer it correctely and get 25% off your purchase.*

*excludes consigned pieces

Shayla, Nova, Tori and I look forward to seeing you soon!

Look for our sign in #9!
